Smelters Beat Joes in 17 in Game 1
One game in and the Interleague Series is already looking exhausting.

The Marquette Smelters and the Saginaw Joes needed 17 innings to settle Game 1, with the Smelters finally taking the 5-3 victory at Old Growth Forest. Excelling in the win was Marquette pitcher Valerio Álvarez, who threw 5.0 innings of shutout ball. The Smelters and Joes are playing a best-of-5 series.

Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for M. Izquierdo? The 33-year old first baseman Izquierdo stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 17th inning to put Marquette up, 4-3. For the game, he was 2 for 8, including 1 double and 1 single.

Izquierdo called the triumph "a good team win."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Old Growth Forest in Saginaw.
