The Derby Rams kicked off the 1914 season with a decisive 10-2 win over the Birmingham Tradesmen at Derby Stadium. Derby right fielder Miguel Salcido was already in midseason form. He slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. The winning pitcher was Israel Tuan. His record now stands at 1-0. The right-hander went 8.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 10 hits for the Rams.

With Derby leading 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Salcido hit a fastball from Aristodemo Rodríguez for a 3-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Rams ahead, 5-0.

"When the other team makes a mistake," said Salcido, "you've got to make them pay."
