Newport Wins, 3-2, Over Foxes
|
The Newport Pilot Whales got a rain-soaked win over the Woonsocket Foxes.
Despite a great performance by Woonsocket second baseman Donagh Smith, the Newport Pilot Whales defeated the Foxes by the score of 3-2 in 11 innings at The Foxhole. Smith went 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times. Melquíades Ortiz was the winner in relief. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Ed Wilson. Picking up the save was Palamedes Álvarez, his 4th.
Newport used a timely hit from Tiburcio Marino to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 11th inning to put the Pilot Whales ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.
"We'll kick back a while," said Marino, "and then get ready for the next one."
The second-place Pilot Whales lifted their record to 27-27.
