Newport Rallies for 5-4 Victory
|
The Newport Pilot Whales picked up a win at The Pod Pad, dropping the Providence Gems, 5-4. Santiago Treviño, who is tied for 10th in the SNEA in complete games with 14, was the difference-maker. The Pilot Whales sit in third place in the Southern New England Association Rhode Island Circuit with a record of 45-53.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Alrigo Salazar came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Providence pitcher Ernie Ross, he hit a 2-2 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Newport on top, 5-4.
"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Providence manager Matías González said, following the tough loss.
