Though the conditions were not ideal, the Providence Gems and Newport Pilot Whales came back from a rain delay to finish their game.
Dewey Thomas was a vital contributor to the 4-1 Providence victory over Newport. The Gems center fielder was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI. Baldovino Font, the winner, improved to 7-14. He held the Pilot Whales to 1 run on 5 hits over 8.1 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 7. Al Burris, who leads the SNEA in saves with 11, earned the save for Providence.
With Providence leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Thomas hit a run-scoring single off Newport hurler Santiago Treviño. It was the 87th hit of the season for Thomas and put his team ahead, 2-0.
Providence manager George Bechtel commended his team for delivering "maximum effort."
Providence now sports a record of 39-65.
