Gems Use Late Surge to Win
The Providence Gems and Newport Pilot Whales completed their game despite the rain.

The Providence Gems faced a tough opponent in Newport pitcher Jacinto Soto, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Newport Grounds by a final score of 6-4. Soto went 10 innings and allowed 4 runs. Al Burris closed the game out for Providence, earning his 3rd save.

Providence got the win thanks to a clutch hit from Blas Cazares. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run double in the top of the 11th inning to put the Gems ahead, 6-4. Though it was his only hit in 1 at-bat, it had a major impact on the outcome.

"Our team showed some gumption," said Cazares. "I like it."

The first-place Pilot Whales now sit at 76-50.
