New York Beaten, 2-1, by Philadelphia
|
The Philadelphia Phillies used a great performance from three-time All-Star Bob Black to beat the New York Giants, 2-1, at National League Park 1895-1909. The winner was Scott Stratton in relief. His record improves to 11-7. Bert Abbey took the loss. Philadelphia is now 53-39, 3½ games up in the Eastern League.
Up to bat in the bottom of the 11th, 35-year old third baseman Charlie Babb had a chance to be the hero. New York pitcher Bert Abbey wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Babb hit a sacrifice fly. The Phillies had themselves a thrilling win.
"We couldn't have scripted it any better," Black said in his postgame press conference.
