Pirates Suffer 7-3 Loss to Senators
|
The Washington Senators topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7-3. Leading the way was center fielder Johnny Bates. Bates was 3-3 with 3 singles and a walk, while scoring 2 runs for the Senators. Steve Stewart got the win, improving to 9-8. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 7. The 4th-place Senators are now 47-51, the Pirates 53-45.
Washington took the lead with two out in the top of the sixth when Doc Gessler stroked a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of Washington. For the day, Gessler went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2.
"There's a lot in this game you can't control. Just take what the game gives you. I was just doing my best to help the team win," Gessler told the Washington Gazette.
