The Grand Marais Voyageurs did little to support starter Aluino de Varona against the Sault St. Marie Rapids, but it turned out he didn't need the help.
The right-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Rapids, striking out 8 and surrendering 5 hits. The performance from de Varona allowed Grand Marais to escape with the 2-0 win, despite an anemic offense.
"Nobody came to me and said, 'Aluino, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," de Varona told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it."
So far this season, de Varona has 12 wins and 13 losses and a 3.72 ERA.
