Whalebacks Saddle Zeniths with 6-2 Loss
|
A nice crowd turned out for a clash between the Superior Whalebacks and Duluth Zeniths.
The Superior Whalebacks knocked off the Duluth Zeniths, 6-2, in Western Great Lakes Association action at Edmund Fitzgerald Park. Superior pitcher and Ponce, Puerto Rico, native Toribio Gamboa had an outstanding performance. Gamboa, now 10-16, was the winner. In 5.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 4, walking 0, and allowing 1 run.
Nick Snyder had a big run-scoring triple for the Whalebacks in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Superior leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a knuckle curve from 27-year old right-handed pitcher Constancio Medina and swatted a triple to right. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Whalebacks ahead, 2-0.
Said Superior manager Devin Durrett: "At the end of the day, these guys have to perform between the lines, and I think they did."
The last-place Whalebacks now sit at 51-78.
