Smelters Win at Home, 4-3
|
Valerio Álvarez, who leads the WGLA in quality starts with 25, was locked in. The right-hander led the Marquette Smelters to a 4-3 win against the Superior Whalebacks at Pig Iron Stadium. The first-place Smelters have their sights set on making a deep playoff run.
Lope Reyes had a big 2-run double for the Smelters in the bottom of the third inning. With Marquette leading 2-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from 20-year old right-handed pitcher Zoilo Álvarez and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 17th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Smelters ahead, 4-0.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Marquette manager Randy Silander.
