The Maracaibo Independientes downed the Coro Bizantinos, 4-1, at Estadio de Maracaibo. Stellar pitching by Iapeto Martínez had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who is tied for 8th in the LO with a 2.1 K/9 rate, handcuffed his opponent all game. At 61-42, the Independientes find themselves in first place in the Liga Oeste.

The Independientes benefited from an error in the bottom of the third inning. Maracaibo was trailing 1-0 when Haruyoshi Yamashita hit a 2-run single that was misplayed. It put Maracaibo in front, 2-1.
