Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at El Monasterio.

Ciego de Avila got a big-time effort from pitcher Esteban Cortés, but it wasn't enough to keep the Guantanamo Cocoteros from winning the game, 8-5. Cortés threw 7.1 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. Santino Salgado picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 9-18. Jesús Solís was tagged with the loss.

The result might have been different, had it not been for 26-year old shortstop Rubén Almendares. Almendares had a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Cocoteros ahead, 6-5. For the game, Almendares had 1 double and 1 single in 6 at-bats.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Almendares.

The third-place Cocoteros are now 57-73, the Monjes Grises 52-78.
