Rain could not dampen the pregame excitement of Santiago de Cuba fans. But the subsequent loss, and a disappointing one at that, to the Escultores had to.
The Las Tunas Escultores met little resistance from the Santiago de Cuba Soneros, beating them, 12-2, at Terreno de Soneros. Mateo Saiz led the way. He was 2-3 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5 for Las Tunas. Raúl Ozuna earned the win to go to 11-8. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 8 innings of work.
With Las Tunas leading 2-0 in the top of the first, Saiz hit a run-scoring single off Santiago de Cuba hurler Samuel Martí. It was the 49th hit of the season for Saiz and put his team ahead, 3-0.
Said Santiago de Cuba manager Jorge Sánchez after the blowout loss: "They did pretty much every facet of the game better than we did and that's why we lost."
Today's win puts Las Tunas at 50-33, while Santiago de Cuba falls to 32-48.
