Hidalgo got a big-time effort from pitcher Julio Irizarry, but it wasn't enough to keep the Oaxaca Zapotecos from winning the game, 2-1. Irizarry threw 7.2 innings allowing 1 run for the losing team. Luis Vilca earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 4 innings. His record is now 1-2. The 5th-place Zapotecos lifted their record to 16-14.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Induciomaro Ávila came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Hidalgo pitcher Sófocles García, he hit a 2-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Oaxaca on top, 2-1.
"Good pitching stops good hitting," said Ávila. "And vice-versa."
