The rain made it unbearable at times; nonetheless, the faithful who endured the elements enjoyed themselves.
The Hidalgo Cornicos picked up a win at Jardines de Pachuca, knocking off the Merida Trovadores, 4-0. Starting pitcher Julio Irizarry was a big reason why. Irizarry yielded no runs over 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. His record improves to 13-11. Hernando Rodríguez got the save, his 20th in 24 chances.
There was more than one reason the Cornicos beat the Trovadores, but Irizarry's big at-bat in the bottom of the second was an important factor. He staked his team to a 1-0 lead when he hit a run-scoring single.
"Julio didn't monkey around out there," said Hidalgo field general Rafael Alecio.
The second-place Cornicos now sit at 66-43.
