Pennant Series Game 1 Victory for Sakai and Kumamoto
The Kumamoto Kuma started the Pennant Series in style, downing the visiting Yamatokoriyama Kingyo at Kuma Stadium by a score of 7-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Kuma right-hander Tokutomi Sakai threw 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball.

With Kumamoto leading 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Tom Downey hit a bases-clearing double off Yamatokoriyama pitcher Acacio Velásquez. It put the Kuma ahead 5-1.

"It's true for every sport, I think, but the playoffs are so short that you've just got to get in and get hot," Kumamoto manager Plinio Cortez told BNN after the win. "We took care of the first part and now we're just working on the second."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Kuma Stadium in Kumamoto.
