The Merida Caballeros picked up a win at Campo de Barinas, knocking off the Barinas Viajeros, 7-1. Starting pitcher Esteban Rivera played a key role in the triumph. Rivera, now 9-5, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 1, walking 6, and allowing 1 run. Merida is third in the Liga Oeste with a record of 53-47.
With Merida leading 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Rivera hit a cutter from Quilvio González for a run-scoring double. It was his 1st double of the season and put the Caballeros ahead, 4-1.
"This game will punch you right in the mouth," said Rivera. "My job is to show up and give my team a chance."
