Rio Grande Triumphs with Late Surge

The rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Rio Grande fans at Recinto Atlético del Noreste.
The Rio Grande Cotorras trumped the Ciales Galanes, 8-4, at Recinto Atlético del Noreste. Rio Grande right fielder Raúl Alzate was terrific. He was 2 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Ezequiel Vásquez, the winner, improved to 10-5. He held Ciales to 4 runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, while racking up 8 strikeouts.
Had Alzate not come through in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have changed. Instead, with two down, Alzate hit a grand slam home run. The Cotorras never looked back after taking the 5-4 lead.
Rio Grande manager Serapión Gutiérrez commended his team for "putting the pedal to the metal."
Rio Grande, at 51-24, is 19½ games up in the Liga Betances El Yunque.
